KUCHING: More health programmes and exhibitions should be organised in rural areas throughout the state to promote awareness of healthy living, said Assistant Environment and Public Health Minister Datuk Dr Stephen Rundi.
Speaking at the Sarawak Health, Wellness, Beauty and Halal Expo 2011 yesterday, Dr Rundi stressed that a balanced healthy lifestyle was important to stay away from illnesses.
“We have good food here but we have to control and burn the fat. We have to look good physically and feel good mentally. Most of the time, people talk about getting rich, but we also need a balanced health,” he said.
As such, he welcomed private sector collaboration with the Health Department to organise programmes to disseminate information on healthy living in rural areas to benefit more people.
Meanwhile, the event’s organising chairman Tiong Soon King said 80% of the 46 exhibitors occupying 50 booths at the expo were from Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, which showed that Sarawak was still on their business radar.
“This expo is the perfect networking platform for exhibitors, consumers and those in the fields of health, wellness, beauty and halal products besides aiming at complementing the government’s efforts to continually promote health and wellness as a lifestyle,” he said.
Tiong said many of the exhibitors were also multinational corporations with a long history of operations in Malaysia and their products were household names, including Wyeth, Unilever, Vitahealth, GNC, Merek and Wen Ken Group.
The Expo held at Permata Exhibition Hall here is opened from 10am until 9pm daily until this Sunday.
A series of talks and seminars will be held during the three-day event. A blood donation campaign will be held today from 11am to 3pm.
A children’s art and colouring contest will be held this Sunday morning while a father’s day celebration activities will be held in the evening with lots of attractive prizes to be won.
